Now that our consciousness is opening more widely and we start to connect with other parts of ourselves we have to redefine the meaning of grounding and the way it works.
This is a series of articles about the new grounding. This article will be about my basic definition of the old and some elements of the new grounding. Furthermore I will write about ways to check whether you are, in this temporary definition grounded or not.
Some redefinition
The way most people talk about grounding involves energetically connecting their body into the earth. This is the old common and somewhat simplified definition of grounding.
As I explained in my previous article there is more to this.
Energetically connecting into the earth is absolutely a welcome activity, because it means you are able to discharge. This way you can let go of all your polarities attached to your emotions. You simply release them into the earth. Discharge. Just like you discharge electrical equipment by attaching a grounded cord and a grounded plug, you are able to discharge your body by releasing the polarities of your emotions into the earth. To do this it is necessary to connect energetically into the earth. Many times this is visualized by growing deep roots from out of your body into the floor.
If you are not energetically connected you will carry these charges with you in your body, not being able to release them. You may keep these charges for hours, days, weeks, months. Discharging usually then happens in a not very nice way, like throwing it all out in a major (physical or mental) fight or by letting your body come to a rest, and ground again while lying in bed sick.
Energetically connecting your body into the earth is therefore an important function of grounding. But grounding means more than this. It also means being energetically present. Your life-force energy is supposed to be present in all your qualities (physical body, emotional, social, mental and spiritual selves). I will describe this new, more extended definition of grounding in more detail in a following article. But you can already keep in mind that this is essential in the new grounding.
In this article I will focus on grounding in the physical body, being present with your life-force energy in all parts of you physical body.
Grounding may serve you in different ways
Temporarily having redefined grounding being present with your life-force energy in your physical body and energetically connecting your body to the ground it may serve you in different ways.
First of all, being present with your life-force energy in all parts of your physical body literally enables your body to function well. You are able to feed your body with your life-force energy, which will make it strong, healthy and enables the rejuvenation process to take place.
Furthermore it helps you to sense everything that is happing inside your body and to sense information about what is happening outside your body. You are aware of all these signals which you can experience through your body. Being grounded this way enables you to stay alert and react adequately. While not being grounded often leads to a loss of alertness and inadequate reactions. Further on I will explain this in more detail.
Being grounded, as in being energetically connected with your body into the earth, enables you to release and discharge polarities. To do so, you also need to be present with your life-force energy in your physical body. Only visualizing roots that grow from under your feet into the earth does not work! You need to be energetically present with your life-force energy. Only when you are energetically present you are able to exchange energy through these roots with the earth. Your energies flow into the earth, discharge and may even charge itself with earthly energies that suit you.
Being present and aware
Being grounded in your physical body means that your life-force energy is flowing through every part of your physical body. You are energetically present and aware of every cell of your physical body. From head to toe!
You are able to feel every sensation in your physical body. You also are able to sense all information that you are aware of through your senses. Information from your inner perception and also information from the outer world.
How to recognize whether you are grounded or not?
All in all grounding makes you aware of quiet a lot of information. That is why many people close down their presence to the part they feel/think is most functional. In our western, mentally oriented society this means many people are only present in their head. Thinking has become the major habit.
If you are one of these persons who are only present in your head you think a lot. You worry a lot. You close down your systems of awareness and only are aware of and focus on your own reflections in your head. And they can drive you crazy!
Because most of your energy is inside your head, you may have headaches. This of course also has to do with genetic predisposition. But just watch, during one day meetings, how many people get a headache after lunchtime. This often has to do with not being grounded. Every chairman and trainer should know this and take precautions.
When you’re not grounded and you’re only present inside your head, you don’t feel the lower parts of your body: your feet, your legs, sometimes even your belly.
I once met this lady who didn’t have any connection with her legs. I could have pricked a pin in her legs and she wouldn’t have noticed. Wow! Of course most people are not this far disconnected with their body. But how many times do you bruise without noticing? When you undress, how many times do you notice by surprise (!) you have bruising. Of course, it’s possible you forgot you bruised, but that is not what I mean here. This is about not noticing it at the very moment it happens. When you are grounded in the meaning of being present and aware of your body you will notice the bruising and take care you won’t in future time! After I’ve explained this to my clients some weeks later they often victoriously tell me they have less bruising. Because they are far more grounded and therefore present and aware of everything that happens to their body!
When you’re not energetically connected with your physical body, you usually have less life force energy in your limbs. This often results in feeling cold in your hands and feet, and sometimes even the tip of your nose. These feelings of coldness may also imply that your body needs your energy somewhere else more urgently. Like when you have the flu. So when you notice you have cold hands, feet or the tip of your nose freezes, first start doing your grounding exercise, which should make your life-force energy flow through every part of your body. If this doesn’t work, you should consider there’s something out of balance in your physical body and take precautions, like maybe have an early night sleep.
When you’re energetically not present in your physical body, when there is little life-force energy flowing through your body all of your bodily functions work less well. You may notice this by being less able to sense through your senses. If you were a fox you would notice pretty soon you were not able to smell your prey. We humans usually are not very much into smelling in a way that is as detailed as a fox.
We may notice we don’t hear as well or in as much detail. Like at the end of the day in a meeting, you are able to hear someone is talking. But what this person is saying you really don’t know. It simply feels to far away.
For myself I often notice that my sight is getting less clear. Everything looks more cloudy. My sight is absolutely less sharp and less detailed, everything looks further away.
You don’t have to recognize all examples as mentioned above regarding not being grounded. Take care that you are grounded, while living on this planet. Start reconnecting your life-force energy into your physical body and thén energetically connect with the earth.
If you recognize yourself as being not grounded, you probably want to know some
practical tools to help. In my following article I will come to this extensively, because grounding in relation to your feelings/emotions is crucial. Without this information and the conclusions that come with it you may practice grounding exercises, but these will probably work only for a short time. This is because you only scratch the surface and not solve the real issue which lies underneath.
Keeping this in mind, here’s a small exercise. Slap your hands on your body, all parts, from your head to your toes. Your breast, stomach, thighs, legs, feet, your head( be careful) , neck, shoulder, arms. Also the backside of your body. The back of your head, your back, the backside of your legs, all the way down to your heel . Not to soft, with some force, you must be able to feel it. Not too hard, you don’t want to bruise yourself. Be aware of what you experience in your body parts. Be aware of your physical sensations in every part of your body while your slap those parts. Usually you don’t feel the first slaps, but after that you literally are more aware of what is happening in your body. Be aware of the touch of your hands with your body, feel this touch/slap, feel it becoming more warm etc. If you do so you are, at least at that very moment, present again in your body. You can end this exercise stamping your feet on the ground. Be aware of your bodily sensations and also feel the connection with the ground.
There’s more to come….
There’s more to come about this new grounding, what it is (more extendedly), why many people are not grounded, how to take care you are grounded, why grounding techniques alone don’t work, how it does works and why it is so important.
In my following article I will focus on the impact of feelings and emotions on grounding, some activities which may lead to being more grounded, and different reasons for not being grounded.
